Import from China to Kenya β€” Sourcing, PVOC & DDP Delivery

Kenya is East Africa's largest import hub, with Chinese goods representing the country's single largest source of imports. Kenyan importers face specific compliance requirements β€” particularly the Pre-export Verification of Conformity (PVOC) programme β€” along with Mombasa port procedures and the logistics of inland delivery across a large geography. Elite Global Trade manages sourcing, PVOC compliance and DDP delivery to Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and upcountry Kenya from our Hong Kong base.

Why Kenya Importers Work With Us

PVOC managed before shipment. Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) requires Pre-export Verification of Conformity for regulated product categories. We coordinate with KEBS-appointed inspection bodies in China to obtain PVOC certificates before goods leave the factory.

Mombasa port expertise. We prepare SGS pre-shipment inspection documentation and structure manifests to minimise customs examination at Mombasa Port.

Northern Corridor logistics. For goods destined for Nairobi or upcountry, we coordinate with SGR (Standard Gauge Railway) and road transport partners for efficient inland delivery.

Audited factories only. Every supplier has been verified on-site. No middlemen or unverified trading companies.

DDP to your door. We deliver duty-paid to your Nairobi warehouse, distribution centre or upcountry location.

    PVOC Explained

What is PVOC and Which Products Need It?

The Pre-export Verification of Conformity (PVOC) programme, administered by Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), requires that regulated products undergo conformity assessment in the country of origin before shipment to Kenya. Products are tested and inspected against Kenyan or international standards by KEBS-appointed inspection bodies, who issue a Certificate of Conformity (CoC). Without a valid CoC, goods are subject to destination inspection in Kenya β€” which causes delays, additional costs and potential refusal of entry.

We manage PVOC for our Kenyan clients by coordinating with KEBS-appointed bodies operating in China, scheduling inspections during production and obtaining the CoC before loading.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What documents are needed to import goods from China to Kenya?

Required documents include: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, PVOC Certificate of Conformity (for regulated products), Import Declaration Form (IDF) filed via Kenya TradeNet, and a pre-arrival declaration. We prepare the China-side documents and advise on IDF requirements.

How long does importing from China to Kenya take?

Typically 7-10 weeks: 1-2 weeks factory sourcing and PVOC initiation, 3-4 weeks production, 1 week pre-shipment inspection and documentation, 22-28 days sea transit, 3-7 days Mombasa port clearance and inland delivery.

Does Kenya have import duties on Chinese goods?

Kenya applies standard EAC (East African Community) Common External Tariff rates, typically 0%, 10% or 25% depending on product category. Some products also attract import declaration fees and railway development levy. We include accurate duty estimates in every landed cost quote we provide.

Can you deliver to Nairobi directly from Mombasa?

Yes. We coordinate onward delivery from Mombasa port to Nairobi via SGR (Standard Gauge Railway) β€” which is faster and more reliable than road β€” or by road freight for destinations not served by the railway. Delivery to upcountry Kenya is also available.
